For an authentic Italian experience, go have an espresso at Buongiorno Italia with Tony and his family. Whether you are a regular or not, 18 or 80. you will get some lively witticisms, a bit of cheekiness and some fantastic food and drink recommendations.
The deli boards are generous, the vegetarian ciabatta with spicy olives, blue cheese (for bacon lovers like me add crispy pancetta) is rave worthy, the coffee is Illy and there is a huge range of Italian food, groceries, olive oil, sausage, saltfish and more. If you are lucky, there might be some chocolate covered breadsticks or the fabulous salted caramel panettone. The patio is perfect in summer time for a cold Peroni or glass of prosecco with a big wedge of creamy gorgonzola, fresh pesto, a little pancetta, fresh bread and olive oil.
I am very fond of sitting on a Saturday afternoon, listening to the chatter of Italian accents and enjoying a slice of Italy right here in the heart of St Albans.
